Discover Magazine's Dr. Phil Plait was inspired to highlight the scientific story about the SkyCenter's image of M82. M82 is a galaxy that is cherished by public stargazing programs since it is one of a few galaxies that can be seen well (visually) with the moon in the sky (or from moderately bright cities). Thus, the SkyCenter needed a deep image of it to show off its true nature. This image is a special blend of visual light plus extra exposure time in the red light that the hydrogen gas is emitting- which helps to more clearly define the outflows from M82.
