SkyCenter image of NGC 1579 Published on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day Website
Friday, March 9, 2012

The astronomers at NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day selected the recent SkyCenter image of NGC 1579 to be published on this day March 9th, 2012. Many nebulae that are visible towards the center of our Milky Way galaxy display captivating colors due to the sheer number of stars and seeming hustle and bustle of the inner spiral arms. Far fewer nebulae in the outer arms, with few stars and activity, are equally ostentatious. NGC 1579 is one of the exceptions.  It is sometimes called the Trifid of the Northern Hemisphere. A quick view of the Trifid nebula towards the galactic center will instantly demonstrate the reason why.
