Twice a year, the Earth passes between the Sun and the moon, creating a shadow across the moon’s face. At least, twice a year this happens when the moon is full, treating us Earthlings to a Total Lunar eclipse. Then, when Sunlight bends in the 700nm wavelength (red) causes the moon to appear blood-red. On January 20, 2019, the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter is celebrating this “super wolf blood moon” as well as their 10 year Anniversary. In 2008, Adam Block and the University of Arizona College of Science launched the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter at Steward Observatory’s Field Station. During the past ten years, the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter has built upon the mission to engage people of all ages in the process of interdisciplinary scientific exploration at research facilities in the Sky Island environment to foster a deeper understanding of our Earth and our place within the Universe.

To celebrate the landmark anniversary and the Total Lunar eclipse, the SkyCenter is hosting a special event at their facility. Ticket prices include the StarGazing Program as well as an anniversary t-shirt, a special dinner, a presentation by Dolores Hill, OSIRIS-REx Ambassador Lead and Target Asteroids! Citizen Science Co-Lead, and the once in a lifetime view of a super wolf blood moon from 9,137ft above the Tucson valley.

The event begins at 5:00pm MST at the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter. The eclipse is expected to begin at 8:30pm, and last until at least 11pm. Tickets are $175 per person, with a minimum age of 7 required.

Join us for an experience you will never forget!
