Messier Marathon 2021

A Virtual Experience

6 p.m. to 6 a.m., March 13 to 14, 2021

WHEN: March 13, 2021

TIME: 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm MST

Operation: Cloudy Skies

While snow has come to the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter, our live stream for tonight's Messier Marathon will go on! We will be broadcasting live from 6pm - 9pm MST with images of Messier Objects, visits from astronomers and NASA Solar System Ambassadors, an insider's tour of the Catalina Sky Survey, and much, much more!

On March 13th the SkyCenter will hold our annual Messier Marathon – only this year it will be virtual, and streamed on our YouTube channel, free of charge!  The Messier Marathon is an event for amateur astronomers and sky-gazers around the world to observe as many objects as possible (out of 110) from the Messier Catalogue of Nebulae and Star Clusters in a single night.

While we typically hold this event in person at the observatory, this year we will live-stream images of the objects throughout the night from our 32” Schulman Telescope, accompanied by interesting information on the Messier objects, guest presentations on related topics, and other exciting astronomical information over the course of the entire night, until dawn.

We will have the MLSC staff presenting along with guest speakers, activities for kids (at 7:30 PM MST), as we view the Messier Objects in real-time through our telescope.

If you would like to actively participate in the marathon and engage directly with our staff, presenters, and guest speakers in real-time. You can fill out a form to register for the Zoom panel discussion.

Space is limited so register soon!

We hope you consider making a suggested $25 dollar or greater donation when registering for the Zoom panel event. All donations made in support of this event benefit the Mt. Lemmon SkyCenter, where we engage people of all ages in the process of scientific exploration as we foster a deeper understanding of our Earth within the Universe.

All this would not be possible without your continued support

Download our Messier Marathon Observing List pdf file and follow along with our live-stream to count how many objects you observe throughout the night.

Then submit your completed list or number that you observed here and receive your official certificate for the 2021 Messier Marathon!

With a $100 or more donation to our Outreach Program, you become a Member of the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter.
